Sleep deprivation

One night without enough sleep can cause elevated blood pressure all through the next day, according to the Harvard Medical School.  If an individual suffers from sleep deprivation this could lead to higher risks of chronic health problems like high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.   If this is not reason enough to ensure you get enough sleep keep reading…..  Top ten reasons to get enough sleep:

  1. Reduce Accidents

Over the years numerous accidents have stemmed from sleepiness including the nuclear accident in 1979 at Three Mile Island the massive Exxon Valdez oil spill and the 1986 nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl.  A sleepy person has a similar reaction time to that of a drunk driver.  The national Highway traffic safety administration 100,000 crashes.

  1. Reduced intelligence

Rest allows the cognitive processes such as thinking and learning to occur.  First your attention, alertness, concentration, reasoning, and problem solving.  This makes learning, recalling information, and problem solving very difficult.

  1. Reduced sex drive

Studies show that individuals that have shown that lack of sleep lowers libido and reduces sex drive.  For men this means that low testosterone levels. 

  1. Increases possible depression

A recent poll of individuals with sleep disorders were also diagnosed with depression or anxiety as they were slept less than 6 hours a night.  At extreme levels such as insomnia often aggravates symptoms of depression and makes it more difficult to fall asleep.

  1. Increase weight gain

Lack of sleep is typically related to increased hunger and appetite and possibility of obesity.  Less than 6 hours of sleep can increase obesity by 30% vs. those that get 7-9 hours of sleep.
